The Beginning: 2014 – Laying the Foundation
In 2014, P.C.E.A Chogoria Mission Hospital embarked on a transformative journey to enhance palliative care (PC) services. The road was challenging, as the facility was primarily dependent on external donors to facilitate essential training for nurses, clinicians, and pharmacists. Despite these limitations, the hospital was steadfast in its mission to provide compassionate care.
Recognizing the critical need for specialized knowledge in palliative care, the hospital-initiated training programs for its dedicated staff. Palliative care professionals held CME sessions and grand rounds, creating invaluable opportunities for nurses and clinicians to deepen their understanding and skills. This knowledge-sharing model not only uplifted the care provided but also empowered caregivers during home visits, ultimately improving the quality of life for patients.
By 2014, the hospital had two dedicated palliative care professionals, a modest yet significant foundation for future growth.
A Decade of Growth: 2024 – Advancing Compassionate Care
Fast forward to 2024, and P.C.E.A Chogoria Mission Hospital stands as a beacon of hope and healing. The past decade has seen remarkable advancements in palliative care training and service delivery. The hospital has expanded its training initiatives, now actively educating a wider range of healthcare professionals, including nurses, clinicians, and pharmacy technicians.
A notable feature of the current approach is the integration of training for medical students and interns. Through CMEs and community home visits, the hospital continues to impart essential knowledge and skills, enriching the next generation of healthcare providers. This commitment to education not only enhances the capabilities of the current staff but also fosters a culture of compassion and understanding in palliative care.
Celebrating Achievements: A Collaborative Effort
The collaboration with Maua Methodist Hospital and KEHPCA has been instrumental in advancing the training programs. Their support has allowed P.C.E.A Chogoria Mission Hospital to train more healthcare workers, significantly increasing the capacity to provide quality palliative care services in the community.
As part of their ongoing commitment, the palliative care team actively engages in home visits, bringing comfort and support to patients and their families. These visits exemplify the hospital’s holistic approach to care, addressing not just medical needs but also the emotional and spiritual well-being of patients.
