Mombasa is well connected, giving participants a choice of comfortable and scenic travel options:

  • By Air – Moi International Airport (MBA) receives domestic and international flights. Shanzu is easily accessible from the airport by taxi or ride-hailing service.
  • By SGR Train – The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Nairobi to Mombasa offers a scenic 5–6 hour journey through Kenya’s plains, wildlife corridors, and coastal landscapes. As the SGR is a popular mode of travel, we recommend booking SGR tickets early to secure your preferred travel date and time. SGR booking and ticketing link: https://metickets.krc.co.ke/index.php
  • By Road – Long-distance buses or self-drive vehicles connect Nairobi and other towns to Mombasa.

While non-compulsory, regional and international delegates may obtain travel insurance before traveling to Kenya. A comprehensive policy can provide peace of mind by covering medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and other unexpected situations.

A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is compulsory only for travelers arriving from, or transiting through, countries where Yellow Fever is endemic. Delegates traveling from countries not affected by Yellow Fever do not require the certificate. For the official WHO list of affected countries, please see: WHO Yellow Fever Countries & Requirements

The official currency in Kenya is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). Notes are available in denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1,000 shillings.

  • Payments: Most hotels, restaurants, and larger shops accept major credit/debit cards (Visa, MasterCard). However, carrying some cash in Kenyan Shillings is recommended for small purchases, local markets, and transport.
  • Mobile Money: Kenya is well known for M-Pesa, a widely used mobile money system, though it usually requires a local SIM card.
  • Currency Exchange: Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks, authorized forex bureaus, and at the airport. ATMs are also widely available.
  • USD vs KES: While many hotels and tour operators quote prices in US Dollars, payment is usually accepted in both USD and KES. For day-to-day expenses, using Kenyan Shillings is more practical.
  • Tip: If bringing US Dollars, carry newer series notes (2010 and above), as some forex bureaus and businesses may decline older notes.

Taxis, Uber, and Bolt are available in Mombasa. Delegates arriving at Moi International Airport can arrange airport transfers with the hotel or book ride-hailing services directly.
